Reflect on direction

Filed under: Employment — webtechbc @ 7:32 am

Do you ever sit back and reflect on the direction your career is going?

Reflecting on career directionA recent lay-off has given me the chance to sit back and reflect on the direction my career is going. A year ago I had know idea what I wanted direction I wanted to go for a living. When we are working we don’t always have the time to think about career direction. Are you going in the direction you want to go?

Unless my dream job comes up and slaps me in the face I think I’m going to go the entrepreneur route. I recently applied for a Social Media Coodinator job with Grouse Mountain. That is the type of job I want. Getting it will be the difficult part. In the mean time I looking for consulting and contracting opportunities.

I’m currently seeking opportunity, full-time, consulting or contracting in the hallowing areas : Blogging, Social Media, Photography, SEO. I have a diverse range of knowledge and am technically savvy. I can customize a wordpress site so it’s search engine optimized. I know how to strategically post on social media sites to boost your site ranking. Photography is what I’m passionate about. If I’m not taking pictures for a job I’ve got my camera with me everyday. I’m Social and Social Media savvy. I’ve taken my @photodreamz account to a klout score of 55. I know how to seek out customers and engage them on Social Media sites.

It’s a bit longer then an elevator pitch but those are my skills. If you are looking for someone that has those skills email me. info at webtechbc dot com.

Mobile Friendly?

Filed under: Social Media — webtechbc @ 11:59 pm

Is your blog mobile friendly?

Mobile devices are coming of age. Almost everyone has an iPhone, Blackberry or smart phone. Even facebook claims that more people use facebook on mobile devices then on desktop computers. If you want to stay competitive while gaining a new audience mobile friendly websites are the way to go.

You can make it easier for them to view your website.

WordPress Mobile Pack is easy to set up and comes in several colour / theme options. When people view your blog posts on a mobile device they will get a slimmed down view of your website. The great part is you don’t have to re-code your site if you don’t want to.

WordPress Setup

Filed under: SEO — webtechbc @ 12:38 pm

WordPress Setup, SEO Optimized

Fresh install of WordPress? There’s a few key things you should do that can improve your blog and SEO. WordPress is already great for SEO, but these changes will help you grow. You don’t even need a fresh install to make these changes and improve your SEO.

Determine your site title.
This is important. Keep it under 65 characters. Name your site around what type of content you are providing. Try and use the website url in the title if possible.

Site URL / Permalinks
Its under Settings tab, Permalinks. Simple is best. Don’t leave it on default switch it to custom. I use /%postname%/ And I try to keep my post names short. E.G. http://wordpress/blog/wordpress-setup. You could also use tags, but postname is great for repeating it in H1 tags and descriptions.

Install redirection plugin
Redirection plug-in is a tool to help prevent site errors when you change a blog title or move things around. Its a good idea to install it when you start. Everyone makes mistakes typing, if you hit publish and then change the url later this plugin keeps things in order.

Install All in One SEO
Its a free plug-in. Here are the settings that you should use. At the very least you should change the post title format to reflect your site permalink changes.

All in one SEO Settings

Install Topsy or Tweetmeme
If possible put the re-tweet button at the top of the post. The key is to allow trackbacks. Trackbacks insert a comment in your blog post with a link. If someone re-tweets your work, you get a link each time on your blog.

Use a Tag Cloud Plugin.
Tag clouds add keywords & keyword density to your posts and blog. It also helps users find posts by keyword.

Social Bookmarking Puglins.
Include at least one social bookmarking plugin on your side bar. Each time you post save your post to the social bookmarking site you chose. This creates a type of RSS feeds, keywords, and links to older posts.

Create an XML sitemap
Plenty of free services out there to do this. I recommend Xml-Sitemaps. Install Google XML sitemaps generator plugin. Plugin Homepage. This plugin will auto update your site map each time you create a blog post. Site maps are important for communicating with search engines.

Use on page Tags & Categories.
If you look at my blog you will see post categories at the top. Post tags could also be used in the blog post. For this blog I use the tag cloud generator for that purpose. These tags add to your keyword density and allow people to find your posts in a search.

On using All in One SEO pack during blog post
Repeat your H1 title in the title of your post. Your Blog posts should have an h1 tag at the top of the post in addition to the regular url title tag. Keep the title under 65 characters. Use the H1 tag again in the description. The description should be under 156 characters. Use your brand name and main site title in the description as well. Luckily all in 1 seo pack has a character count field on blog post forms.

Things to remember when posting. Keep your titles short and simple to the point. Repeat your title in the H1 tag, all in one SEO title & description. Create strategic blog posts that include content related to these titles and descriptions. Don’t just write for search engines. Make it readable to the human eye. Making your posts scalable with highlighted information not only helps readers but search engines. Bolding key phrases are a good way of highlighting information. offers a great resource for optimizing your WordPress blog. I suggest going there as well if you don’t have enough details from my post.

Whats new in DIYThesis 1.8

Filed under: Wordpress — webtechbc @ 12:30 pm

One of the first things I noticed on the new version of DIYThesis 1.8 is its greatly improved from 1.7. They usually release improved new versions, however I did not like 1.7 and held off for 1.8. The reason being the page options on 1.7 included a huge form with all your pages and took forever to load. Often causing my browser to crash.

Some of the new features.
Robots Meta options on the Thesis Site Options tab include a lot more options now. With this features you dont need to write your own robots.txt file. It includes the options, noindex, nofollow, noarchive and noodp noydir. Very useful for people who are not web designers or coders and don’t know a lot about creating robot files.

Widnows Live Writer Support
Windows live writer lets you publish blog content from anywhere. It integrates mail, photos, Messenger, Movies and more. Not something I use so I wont go into to much detail on it. Windows Live Writer site

SEO Character counters under Home Page SEO </code> & <code><meta></code>. If you don't use a plugin like All in One SEO this is extremely usefull. Your title should be 65 characters or less, Description 155 characters or less and keywords 255 characters or less. Remember with google less is more! Diythesis makes it easier to keep track of this.</p> <p><strong>Whats new in Design Options?</strong><br /> A wide variety of google web fonts. 28 of them.
