Follow Friday Profile – CK Golf Solutions

Filed under: Social Media — webtechbc @ 11:00 am

I first met Jeff & Tara through Social Media and I’ve had the privilege of working with them. Ck Golf Solutions teaches they’re clients everything they need to know to use Social Media affectively. If you are in the Golf or hospitality industry and need some Social Media help they are the people to go to. They are professional, and knowledgeable, not to mention great company at a tweet-up. Looking forward to working with them in the future. http://ckgolfsolutions.ca

CK Golf Solutions How did you get started?

We got started with blogging first and it was more about me venting or rambling something about the Canucks. It became clear that Tara wasn’t listening so I started a blog and for the first month or so it was just posts about the good and the bad that were the Vancouver Canucks (in early 2008). Now we both blog regularly on anything that interests us; It is a broad range of topics. We write our blog for us and hopefully the people who enjoy reading it.

What is your social media strategy?

Our objectives with social media (currently) are really to network and meet people outside of the golf industry. This has already proven to create opportunities for best practices from one field that may be applicable in another. In the golf industry we use social media to position ourselves as a leader in business strategies. We are available to help golf courses create their own social media strategies but also to help with a variety of other solutions.

Whats your favorite topic to tweet about?*

I’m not sure we have a favourite topic, I (@ckgolfsolutions) tweet about social media best practice articles I’ve read, some golf industry news and some hockey while Tara @Tara_CKGolf tweets more about Vancouver activities, dining and some golf industry things. Really we try just as hard to participate in conversations as we do to share.

Whats your favorite topic to blog about?

As I mentioned before our blog is a range of topics from golf to hockey, dining to wine, travel to Vancouver activities. We enjoy all these things so it makes them easy topics for us.

Do you have any advice for those new to social media & blogging?

Whether you are using social media personally or for a business you need to engage and participate with your followers and be conscious of what things they are interested in. It’s better to have 10 followers who you ‘talk’ to then 1,000 and never ‘talk’ to any of them. People get obsessed with numbers.

Do you own a business? If so tell us about it.

Tara and I own CK Golf Solutions Ltd. We are full time business consultants who spend about 70% of our time working with clients in the golf industry and 30% of our time with clients who are not involved in golf. We do things like business and strategic planning and provide a variety of marketing services for our clients. We also operate BC tournaments for the Canadian Junior Golf Association. We are very excited to be launching a golf iPhone App (details to come) in March 2011 that we believe will have benefits to both golf courses and consumers.

What are your hobbies besides blogging and social media?

Mountain Biking, Travel, Dining and some golf.

Carol Browne Photographer & BloggerHow long have you been blogging & tweeting?
I’ve been blogging since 2005 at http://carolbrowne.com and tweeting since about…2008? Does that sound right? I think I first registered in 2007, didn’t get it, but then jumped in about 6 months later and been loving twitter ever since.

How did you get started?
My husband, Mike Browne, started sending me links he’d find while he was working as a Creative Director for high tech company in Vancouver. The website that first caught my interest was http://www.ljcfyi.com/ – she was the graphic designer for Kodak at the time, but was blogging about her sewing projects, recipes and her pets. I was really surprised by this. People write about this stuff? I do this stuff, too! So Mike set up a blog for me and I started writing. Soon, I wanted to add photos of my projects to my blog, so I picked up a point and shoot and started taking photos…and that started a whole other interest for me. I just love taking photos. My blog has become a photo-recipe-crafting-goofy day-in-the-life place for me.

What is your social media strategy?
I don’t have any formal strategy in place for my blog at this time – but I am taking courses about online marketing (through my day job) so I’m learning more about that and incorporating that learning into my personal blog. Right now I tweet a bit, post my links on facebook over to my blog and my flickr account. I also attend events for bloggers and do participate in conversations via twitter, so I do a bit of everything.

What’s your favorite topic to tweet about?
Mostly snide comments about day-to-day stuff, but I also love sharing links about crafty things, funny stuff and recipes. I also tweet out my blog posts.

What’s your favorite topic to blog about?
These days, it seems to be about our kitties, but recently we created a family cookbook and I really got into the food photography for that project. I’ve also been blogging about my quilting pals and the quilting guild I joined in Abbotsford – I know, a long haul from Burnaby, but it’s the MODERN quilting guild, so the quilts are very funky and beautiful. I love taking photos of the city, so I blog about stuff to do in Vancouver and I love Christmas, so I’ll be going down that road again very soon. I’m kind of all over the place. Oh…I also started taking an interest in film photography and toy cameras, so I’ll blog about that, too. Someone recently told me I’m a Renaissance woman. Maybe so…I’m just following the stuff I enjoy – which turns out to be a lot.

Do you have any advice for those new to social media & blogging?
Follow your interests. People all over the world have the same interests as you do…and then once you get going, you’ll find people in your very own city with the same interests. Next thing you know, you’ve got a whole community of like-minded people to talk with and even meet in person. I would also suggest starting small – with twitter and commenting on other people’s blogs. Who knows where it will lead you? Please note: I’ve not successfully used social media in the traditional business sense – I’m not making any money online. Not yet, anyway. But am I a success in finding friendly, like-minded people? YES! Have I learned all kinds of new skills as a result of the internet? Yes. Yes. Yes.

Do you own a business? If so tell us about it.
Not yet. One day I’d love to be able to support myself through my creative endeavors, though.

What are your hobbies besides blogging and social media?
Photography (digital and film), any kind of crafty stuff, and baking.

Follow Friday Profile – VanCityBuzz

Today’s Profile is on one of Vancouvers Top Bloggers who’s great at creating local Buzz. Vancitybuzz. Karm has to be one of the nicest people I’ve met in real life from twitter. Down to earth and social. He was kind enough to blog-roll with my own blog before The Vancouver Olympics. If you want to be in the know about whats happening in Vancouver, follow Vancitybuzz.

VancityBuzz - KarmHow long have you been blogging & tweeting?
I’ve been blogging and tweeting for 2 1/2 years now.

How did you get started?
My friend and I were playing video games one day and we came up with an idea to start a blog. I swear we weren’t stoned at the time. At first we were just goofing around and not taking it too seriously. Now we’re still goofing around but I take it a bit more seriously.

What is your social media strategy?
To be social. No matter if you have one follower or one million I will make an effort to communicate with you.

Whats your favorite topic to tweet about?
Making fun of @MichaelTao. Besides that probably girls and politics. Those two seem to generate the most interesting discussion.

Whats your favorite topic to blog about?
I love skyscrapers and urban planning, so naturally that’s my favourite topic to blog about. The model profiles aren’t too shabby either.

Do you have any advice for those new to social media & blogging?
Try different things, see what works and always stay true to yourself!

Do you own a business? If so tell us about it.
The blog is a business I guess, you already know all about that. If not go check it out www.vancitybuzz.com

What are your hobbies besides blogging and social media?
In my spare time if I have any, I usually spend it with my wife and kid. I also love to sketch, play video games and love watching the Canucks! Drinking a few beers with friends too, that’s a hobby right? haha

Last weeks profile was on Minna Van of The Network Hub.

Follow Friday Profile

Its Friday again. My favorite day of the week. Now I’ve got another reason to like Friday is my new profile series. I’m making it a regular feature. The blog is about Social Media, so this feature will also help improve the Social part.

The profile this week is on my friend Adrian Eden. Adrian is an SEO from YaleTown who blogs about life experience. We met at tweet-up. I think we get along we’ll because were both from British Columbia and grew up in small towns.

Adrian Eden

How long have you been blogging & tweeting?
I have been actively Blogging for 3 years and tweeting for 2 years. I look at my Blog http://www.adrianeden.com/ as a way to express myself and thoughts and Twitter @adrianeden as a way to discuss things as they happen in the world around us. I also love Twitter for the hyper local news element.

How did you get started?
I got started because I have always been someone who likes to express myself. I felt empowered and it was a lot of fun. I like to test the  naming conventions and semantic field content placements and watch the rankings in SERP pages go up and down based on that and inbound links.

What is your social media strategy?
My strategy is to have fun and be myself while sharing content that I create and supporting others in getting their voices heard. I truly believe it is all about quality and not quantity. I do not try to monetize my personal Social Media usage, rather I grow relationships and do business with the people I connect with the most deeply. You should know all about that right Ben. ;)

Whats your favorite topic to tweet about?
I love hyper local news and SEO tweets. I also like to hear about photography and anything related to the outdoors like hiking and camping.

Whats your favorite topic to blog about?
I like to Blog about the experiences and people that are in my life as well as high level thinking and the psychology behind technology. You can also find how-to articles and some comedy.

Do you have any advice for those new to social media & blogging?
Do not  follow tons of people and hope they follow you back (on Twitter) but rather focus on the @replies and asking really good questions. You do not have to ask people to follow you if you are creating genuine and interesting conversations. Let the content sell itself. Never forget who you are and do not be afraid of criticism, it just means you are doing something right. You can not please everyone.

For Facebook I would say do not add a bunch of people to your friends list that you do not know as you will get a ton of invites to parties and events that you have no interest in attending. Use it to strengthen already existing real world relationships and share pictures. Always keep in mind that you cannot fake authenticity, it takes time and consistency to earn respect and influence.

Do you own a business? If so tell us about it
I founded YaletownSEO.ca http://yaletownseo.ca/ as a way to drive word of mouth awareness in my skills as an SEO and Internet Marketing professional. I have been fortunate enough to mentor with some of the best people in the online gambling industry, I traveled the world attending conferences such as the iGaming Super Show in Prague, and I also took a commercial web development diploma here in Vancouver at the Institute of Advanced Media. Right now I am working with Coleman Heating  http://colemanheating.ca/ to get their content strategy up and running. I have also worked with Calvin Ayre http://calvinayre.com/ and the Bodog Brand http://www.bodogbrand.com/. I have a number of other clients but would prefer to keep them private at this time. I am currently not taking any new business, but you can hear me speak at the upcoming entrepreneur meetup at The Network Hub http://www.thenetworkhub.ca/ @thenetworkhub on November 18th 2010. I will be taking questions and offering actionable advice for local businesses.

What are your hobbies besides blogging and social media?
I love bodybuilding and traveling.

Last weeks #FF was on Bob Grey local musician and hockey fan.
