How to turn off your blog readers

How to turn off your blog readers

Have you been blogging for a while but are not getting the traffic you want?. This is a list of common reasons why a reader may leave your site or be turned off from the content.

1. Pop-up Ads. Pop-up ads one of the biggest mistakes you can make on a blog. We all want to make money from our blogs, but a pop-up is the fastest way to lose a reader. When I see a pop-up, I don’t even give the website a chance. Good-bye. Most people I talk to about this have the same mindset.

2. Too much advertising. As stated in #1; we all want to make money from our blog. You may not have a pop-up ad but a lot of advertising can have the same affect in turning away visitors.

3. Bad Website font choices. Choosing the wrong font can do long term damage to your website. If your font is small, hard to read and condensed people will not return, even with great content. Make the website readable for everyone and everyone will be happy.

4. Content choices & Audience. Once you have chosen an audience and are getting traffic from it, stick to the content you have chosen. People will come to you because you are consistent about the content you write. It’s ok to go off topic now and then, but don’t make a habit of it.

5. Being negative all the time. People don’t want to read things that are negative or depressing all the time. If you are in the habit of doing this, say something negative and then put a positive spin on it.

6. Blog comment moderation. Turn off moderation. Let a spam plugin do the job. Respond to comments when you get them. Interact with your readers, build community and relationships.

7. Ignoring the blog. Create it and they will come. If you ignore it to long, people forget it’s there. You don’t have to create content everyday, but you should create it 2-3 times a week.

8. Over Promotion. Over promotion can turn off readers. If you use Social Media for example, keep your posts timely, once or twice a day is enough.

Blogging Inspiration

Blogging Inspiration can be difficult to find at times

Writing Inspiration PhotoEvery blogger gets writers block at some point. It’s natural. Depending on the topics you blog about you can also reach a plateau. My blog is about SEO, Social Media and Web Design. Being diverse means that if I get stuck for an idea I can go into another subject. But what do you do when you run out of inspiration?

Read, Learn, Explore, Do. Read other bloggers work, read books, read websites like Mashable. There’s nothing wrong with finding inspiration from current stories or trend. Expand on it, give your own opinion and quote your source.

Learning is important. No matter what industry you are in staying on top of whats new and staying informed can help give you inspiration. When I learn something new I blog about it.

Explore. Not just on the internet but in life. Go outside of your boundaries, do something you would never do. It will give you a story and something to write about. I like to attend networking events and then blog about them. A friend of mine found SEO inspiration from chopping fire wood one day. You never know when an idea may come to you. Sometimes I find inspiration from a photo.

Do. Doing comes in part with exploring, reading, and learning. As Nike says, Just do it. Sit down and start writing. Write about the first thing that you think of. Sometimes when you just write you get into a groove and flow.

Follow Friday Profile – The Network Hub

This Weeks Follow Friday is on Minna Van @thenetworkhub. Minna is one of the 3 founders of a Co-Working space in Downtown Vancouver. She tweets with passion and a sense of humor. She also organizes a monthly meetup group called Vancouver Entrepreneurs! If you are an entrepreneur in Vancouver you should make an effort to get to know Minna. She’s as nice in person as she is online and I’m happy to have her as this weeks Follow Friday. One more thing, read the Fifth Question Carefully. She’s got big news congratulations Minna!. Its well deserved.

The Netwrork Hub - Minna VanHow long have you been blogging & tweeting?
I’m not an active blogger, I can only write when I have something I have to say. I’ve only really started blogging and tweeting because I was inspired by my very good friend Raul (@hummingbird604). I can actually pin point it down to when Raul moved into The Network Hub and it went haywire from there.

How did you get started?
I signed up for an account and didn’t know where to go or what to do. It wasn’t until I discovered Hootsuite – keywords, follow fridays, snooping on other people’s follower list that I realized wow this is cool! I’m like the fly on the wall in a room with a lot of smart people and I’m listening in.

What is your social media strategy?
I didn’t have one when I started but I knew that I had to be true to what our company stood for – connect, create, collaborate. I first connected with people, created relationships then it transformed into collaboration.

Whats your favorite topic to tweet about?
I LOVE technology and humor. I binge read early morning and super late at night, I tweet as I read. Yes I do read very fast for those who might wonder about the flurries of tweets at certain times of day.

Whats your favorite topic to blog about?
I love to blog more about my entrepreneur experience but sometimes it is too real and too hard to put it all into word. Although I think it is really important to share the entrepreneur experience and that is why I am very excited to announce I am one of the bloggers for Vancouver Sun website – blogging about entrepreneurship, the entire experience: the good, the bad and the really ugly. I also blog about food but I’m not a food critic, I can only summarize my experience as nom nom or not nom nom.

Do you have any advice for those new to social media & blogging?
There are too many rules, too many restrictions and I just want to say keep it simple and be who you are. Let it be an extension of yourself and like anything else, ask for help if you need it.

Do you own a business? If so tell us about it.
I am one of the three cofounders of The Network Hub. Hi @jaycatalan and @thehubzette!!! Jay and John are the other two cofounders. When we were looking for space for our database & programming company we couldn’t get space because we were too young, too new to business and we were students with no collaterals. We were then determined to create a space that is affordable for young entrepreneurs, mobile professionals and freelancers. It is a fraternity house for people who are in business for themselves but don’t like the isolation – we support each other, refer leads to each other and help each other through the roller coaster ride of being in business. Check out www.thenetworkhub.ca if you get a chance, we have amazing networking events and workshops for the community for free or at very minimal costs.

What are your hobbies besides blogging and social media?
I like tinkering with new softwares, languages and I confess, I am a beta-invite addict. New technology excites me!!!

Last weeks Follow Friday Profile was on @AdrianEden who will be speaking at the next Entrepreneurs Meetup.
